There will be a free group hike on Cypress Trail starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 6, so show up between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The Cypress Trail access is off of Granite Dells Road, 2 miles east of Hwy 260 on Granite Dells Road. There is limited parking, so participants should park on the side of the road where the shoulder allows on either side of the trail access. This four-mile roundtrip hike of moderately difficulty, with loose granite and some steep slopes in the first and last miles of the hike. Due to recent storms, please be prepared for running water and mud on the trail. Don’t forget your hiking boots, water and walking sticks! Pre-registration is preferred, but can be done on-site prior to the hike. Dogs must be on a leash or under verbal control of their owners. Rim Country Rotary-Payson honored the February Student of the Month, Lanie Olszewski, with a recognition ceremony, a Certificate of Merit and a check for $50 at the club’s Feb. 25 meeting. Lanie was chosen as a representative of the automotive technology program at Payson High School. She currently works at Uncle Tom’s Texaco Food Court in Pine and she plans to have a career in the field of beauty. The duo lip sync’d to the Blackeyed Peas’ “Boom, Boom, Pow” during the annual Lip Sync Contest held Feb. 27 at Payson High School Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the Optimist, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, plus PHS student government and drama club to raise scholarship funds.
More than 200 people attended the first-ever ceremony for the Roundup’s Best of Rim Country awards. Awards were handed out in 66 categories, ranging from best sandwich to best doctor.
Army Spec. Robert T. Packer, 11th Quartermaster Company, Fort Bragg, N.C., helped to prepare needed supplies that were shipped to Haiti after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake left thousands of people without food, water and shelter.
