A storm on Saturday and Sunday left more than five inches of new snow on the Mogollon Rim. Another storm is predicted to come through the Rim Country dropping even more rain and snow into already swollen creeks and the Verde River.

Members of the Senior Circle in Payson have the opportunity to learn any number of new skills, from the latest in computer technology and digital photography to dancing. The main focus is health and fitness education though, so members hear from professionals in the medical industry on a regular basis.

It was mostly rain in Payson, but Pine and Strawberry residents woke to up several inches of new snow Monday. Some areas of the Rim Country reported up to six inches and more of new snow from the latest storm. The storm caused a number of accidents and closed Highway 87 between Payson and Pine for several hours Sunday.

Winning the chef’s contest this year, chosen by participants, was Maggie Evans of the Verde River Rock House Bed and Breakfast; second was Kevin DeWitt of The Rim Club; and Chuck Carrier and Ayothaya Thai Cafe and Sushi Bar took third. Every item in the silent auction sold and the library staff and volunteers are expecting to see a nice sum to come from it, said Bessie Tucker, who coordinated the event. She added it was the best ever.
The annual Taste of Rim Country, a culinary benefit for the Payson Public Library, drew more than 220 people into the stacks at Rumsey Park to sample the wares of numerous professionals and aspiring chefs. Randall House staffer Lisa Murphy helps guest Judy Wilson load her tray with one of the treats the restaurant featured at the event. Also participating at the big event were Kevin DeWitt from The Rim Club, Cindy Fitch from Creekside, Leonie Dobbins of The Red Elephant Bakery and Cafe, Steven LeMonier of the Good Samaritan Society Majestic Rim, Kenny Tassell of Chili’s, Andrew Winiecki of Gerardo’s Italian Bistro, Maggie Evans of Verde River Rock House Bed and Breakfast and Chuck Carrier, who is bringing Ayothaya Thai Cafe and Sushi Bar to Payson in the near future.
Thirty youngsters from grades 3-8 turned out for the Parks and Rec-sponsored Little Longhorn wrestling camp. The program was taught this year by five varsity members of the PHS wrestling
The Little Longhorn wrestling camp is a feeder program designed to prepare young wrestlers for success in the sport at the high school level.
Payson’s team of Shelly Orr, Carol Nethan, Todd Orr and Anne Spencer captured gold, silver and fifth-place medals at the Special Olympics Unified Bowling Team Tournament held in Reno, Nev. last month.
Lady Longhorn pitcher Mary Hagen connected with the ball and sent it into left field during an uphill battle of a game against Chino Valley March 2. The Lady Horns ultimately prevailed, 9-8.
