Isabella and Mario Cervantes discuss which Easter basket they like best as they stroll around the Payson Womans Club and take in the baked goods, the white elephant sale, a silent auction, and lots of Easter baskets and candy, Saturday, March 27. Watching them with interest are Lois Brice, left and Barbara White.
Checking out the homemade baked goods in front of Safeway, Helen Huffer (right) gave everything on the table the once over before she purchased the tasty Heath bars. Chris and Susan Tubbs, and Bertha Ochoa (seated) braved the Saturday morning chill for a good cause — raising money for Payson Community Kids.
Members of Soroptimist International of Zane Grey Country were out in the blustery weather this weekend to help area residents get great treats to fill those Easter baskets.
Boyle watches as the previously injured duck waddles back to the water where it is met by its companion of the last three years, a black mallard with a bushy tuft of feathers at the top of his head.
Before removing the carrier from the Humane Society of Central Arizona van Lisa Boyle explains what possibly led up to the rescue of this semi-tame duck that lives at Green Valley Park. The duck had a three-pronged fish hook stuck in its neck that was graciously removed by a local veterinarian.

Micah Miracle (left) and fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Locke look closely at the bait before deciding which one to use. Miracle had just thrown back a big (about 2 pounds) one. The one that got away from this photographer. Darn, I hate it when that happens.
Davida Guerra isn’t sure she wants to have her hand in this fish’s mouth. She caught it during Frontier Elementary School’s expedition to Green Valley Park Saturday, March 27 before the start of the Optimist Fishing Festival. See additional photos and stories on pages 6A and 1B.
State Superintendent of Education Tom Horne presented Payson Elementary School with a performing plus award during an assembly Monday.
"Team Git-R-Dun" did just that, surviving the competition and repeating their win from last year. Tem spellers Carolyn Wall, Susan Campbell, John Wakelin and Bessie Tucker give each other a much deserved group hug.
Last speller alive for "Team Force" Charyl Gentner, center, stumbles over a word as her teammates Nancy Hood, left, and Ruth Hill provide some chuckles.

Tasha Wallace (left) and Cody Tucker both held the same pole as they ventured off to find a quiet, warm spot to enjoy the day and maybe catch a fish or two.
On a chilly, windy Saturday (March 27), Kolby Campbell held his fish with his jacket sleeves so it wasn’t quite as cold. The early fishermen caught more than fish as the wind blew hard and fast and stirred up the lake water at Green Valley Park as the Rim Country Optimist Club’s Fishing Derby got under way.
