The Gila County CowBelles celebrated their 40th anniversary Oct. 7, 2011 with a luncheon at Dream Manor Inn in Globe. There were 30 CowBelles, including 13 charter members attending to visit and share memories — Like the time the team would not pull their float in the parade so the ladies jumped off, grabbed the tongue and headed down Main Street in Globe through rain and snow. The CowBelles were organized in Douglas, Ariz. on Oct. 17, 1939. The Gila County CowBelles became the 15th local to organize on Oct. 16, 1971. It was chartered with 39 members. Last year, the group awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a Payson student and an award buckle at the Northern Gila County Fair in Payson. They paid tuition for four teachers, from Globe, Payson and Young, to attend the U of A’s Summer in Agricultural Institute and sent funds to the Great AZ Bale-Out to purchase hay for those ranchers affected by the fires in Arizona. They attend fairs and rodeos armed with recipes and information regarding the beef industry.
