Garrett Lance, left, and Austin Alexander, two students at Payson Education Center, work the East Verde between First and Second crossing on Houston Mesa Road, picking up trash and helping to keep the area clean for the many trout fishermen, hikers and tourists who visit this area from early spring to late summer. PEC has unofficially adopted several of the creeks and stream in the Rim Country area and periodically has groups of students out policing the fresh water streams, for the benefit of students, residents, tourists and those ever hopeful fishermen.

This is the work of my friend Dennis Pirch. Through activities like this he gives kids a sense of purpose and points of pride; pride in their community, in their environment and in their own ability to contribute. I would send my kids to PEC any day. Great teachers like Dennis and a great Principal like Peggy Miles. What an outstanding contribution to our community!

Garrett is my Son and I know how important activities like this are to him and to the other students. They take such pride in helping out and in keeping our area clean. Thank you to Mr. Pirch for making this kind of activity a reality.
