Fire crews in the Payson Ranger District use controlled burns to reduce the threat of wildfires to local communities.

Weather permitting, Tonto National Forest fire specialists will begin burning 500 acres of vegetative debris piles at Shadow Rim Ranch, Verde Glen, and erosion tank areas on Monday, October 19.
The lightning-cause Potato Patch fire burning six miles north of Forest Lakes is now at 660 acres, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Payson Ranger District fire crews will burn debris piles in the Verde Glen and Thompson Draw II areas all this week, which could mean smokey afternoons.
