A cold snap earlier this week came close to setting a new record in Payson, but came up a few degrees short. Sunday’s nighttime low hit 7 degrees, slightly higher than the record of 4 set in 1963. Meteorologists said a cold air mass and strong radiational cooling combined to produce the bitter temperatures with readings of minus 4 degrees near the Utah-Arizona border. The average low temperature for that day in Payson was 25 degrees, but has declined steadily in the past few years. In 2011, the low for Jan. 13 was 23 and 20 degrees in 2012. The high Sunday was also low at 33. Expect warmer temperatures through next week. However, the geese at Green Valley Park took the cold spell in stride.
