Disc Golf Tournament June 24, 2009
Looking for a new and different recreational activity or hobby? It might be time to try something you never thought of doing before; disc golf. It’s certainly a great way to get out and enjoy one’s surroundings and have fun while being outdoors. This year brought several families as participants, a new wrinkle at Rumsey and a strong indication that this game is here to stay. A note on disc golf that many people do not know is that it has actually been played seriously and sometimes professionally off and on since the late 1920’s. All photographs; Andy Towle/Roundup
Before the real action began Gregg Almen filled out the registration form at the number four ramada in Rumsey Park.
Chris Kirby, left, and Chris Lombardo look at the board of who is playing with whom during the first round of play at the Third Annual Disc Golf Tournament in Rumsey Park, Saturday, June 20.
Wyatt Griffin strolls along in the gully between the woods and the Kiwanis Little League fields as he picks up a few of his discs. Griffin was out on the course early trying out the terrain, distance and deciding which discs might be best for this part of the course.
Joe Colletti releases his disc from a distinctively different vantage point on the 13th basket as Tyler Matney watches with great curiosity.
Giving it all the english he is worth Tim Munchweiler bends backward as he attempts to help his disc get closer to the basket. Benny Serna, left, and Tyler Matney watch with interest.
Gregg Alman thought the best approach to this hole was throwing a disc perpendicular to the ground as far as it would go, unfortunately, tree branches had other ideas. In the background, Aaron Murry studies the terrain and wonders about the fate of his first disc.
After observing disc golfers tee off, it becomes apparent that catching a disc at the moment of release is a most difficult task. Most disc golfers release with such great force one almost doesn't see the disc until it is several feet past the player. With that said, catching Benny Serna's toss on the tenth hole was a great catch.
Benny Sernalooks as if he might be catching that putter instead of releasing it as he drops a sure one into the 13th hole basket.
Zach Walker peers out from behind a common hazard on the Rumsey Park disc golf course, as he gives the sixth hole his best shot.
