Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo May 20, 2010
Being from back east one hasn't exactly been familiar with the strong roots a rodeo has in the western culture. But being able to go behind the scenes, sit on the fences with real cowboys (no drugstore impostors here), watch the action from a different perspective, one does begin to see this life in a new way. In many ways the action the audience sees, is a young man's game, but the older seasoned cowboys haven't been on the circuits just marking time. They pass along their wisdom, experience and knowledge so those bull riders, bronc busters, and calf roping madmen can become the well worn cowboys of the future. Who will then in their turn show the up and coming rodeo stars how to lasso, ride a bull and beat the buzzer to prize money.
Cody Resor lugs his saddle and bridle to his horse in preparation for the action to come during the Gary Hardt Rodeo, Saturday, May 16.
The Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo gets underway with the usual excitement and pageantry as the flags of state and country are swiftly raced around the arena.
Jessica Finch waits calmly for her cowgirl friends to return to their horses, as she handles the reins for three lively mounts.
Bobbi Riggs breaks out of the gate quickly but this calf veered right as she threw her rope straight on and missed her shot.
Savannah Todd looks like this action is all in slow motion, but one can be deceived by a quick shutter.
Debbie Robins, left, and Terri James look like they have this situation well in control, but it still took them some time to wrap this steer up
Resembling the movements of a classical dance the flag bearers circle the arena center as the sponsors flags are displayed at a gallop by western beauty queens of various rodeo events.
A mainstay of any rodeo are flags and pretty girls. This young lady races around the arena as she displays the Payson Rodeo Committee Flag
Carly Kendall is decked out in pink to celebrate the friday night honors of Tough Enough to wear Pink in honor of money raised to fight breast cancer.
Riding a mechanical bull Landen Johnson manages to stay on for this ride. Though he made it look easier than it actually is.
Boyce Kraut listens to his older brother, Cauy, as they stand with the big cowboys and wait for the action to begin.
Always at the ready, John Beck watches the action closely, ready to jump in and distract an excited bull or horse gone loose or crazy.
Joel Schlegel hung on and rode to the 8 second buzzer and beyond. Whew, he was one happy cowboy to survive and get off that bucking bronc and still be in one piece to boot. The action took place early Saturday evening, May 16, at the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo at the Payson Event Center.

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
