Mountain High Games June 9, 2011
This event had just about everything for outdoor competition on dry land. Let's see, there was a 3-D archery competition, a mountain bike race, a mountain foot race, a kids race, a horseshoe competition with the state champs (men's and women's) in attendance, a Dutch Oven cook-off, a sawdust competition with too many events to mention, country western singers, and a dance and a concert in the park, and an ATV Rodeo. There was so much to do, it took three days to do it. June 3, 4, and 5, and several places around town including Green Valley Park, the Payson Event Center and the Oxbow Saloon. Cut and paste this web address for those of you who would like to purchase photos of the activities of Saturday, June 4's events; http://www.instantimagegallery.com/iig/c/627 The album date of June 8, 2011 has many of the photos from Saturday.
Trisha Hocshaw, the current Women's Arizona Horseshoe throwing champ, warmed up to admiring spectators.
The mountain trail run got off to a grand start with 53 contestants mounting an assault on the rugged trail.
One more charcoal chunk should do it. Ed Wixson gets ready to produce another masterpiece for the Dutch Oven competition.
Mark Wilkins, Arizona President of the International Dutch Oven Society, mixes up another batch of...hmm. Whatever it was it sure smelled good.
Mark Wilkins and Loren Partridge discussed their strategy for the dessert portion of the Dutch Oven cook off.
Gary Bedsworth, left, and Barb Wilkins, instruct Pastor Richard Richey, and his wife, Ronnie, on the finer points of heating a pot correctly to achieve the best results when cooking in the dutch oven style.
The archery competition was swarmed with kids and eager adults, but proper instruction on safety and procedure was the order of the day.
Phil Shahan takes steady aim at the number nine target in a field of twenty-eight 3-D targets set up in the brush near the Payson Event Center.
Cameron Maebe took his time as he took careful aim on a difficult course of well placed 3-D targets.
Jacob K. Barnett's arrow can be seen just leaving the bow as it sped to a foam filled javalina target on the Archery course. Talk about a difficult shot; do you know how hard it is to have the arrow in motion and actually capture that moment of motion?
Leslie and Lea Land took their time setting up for the cross-cut competition, but when the bell sounded cut through this log swiftly.
George and Tyler Harrison looked like they were going to win the mens' cross-cut, but ran into a log that kept binding up their saw.
Astounda Collins didn't let the fast flying chips slow her down in the log cutting contest. One cut up and one cut down.
The ATV Rodeo competition had a few unusual events, and barrel racing isn't exactly an easy course to manage in such a vehicle.
Nathan Harris, left, and Rowen Pickering were the two finalists in the cigar fighting contest. The idea is to put out the cigar with a backpack fire extinguisher within a prescribed circle. The last person with their cigar still smoking wins. Harris won, but only by a few seconds.
What is this? ATV bowling of course. Ride up to the lane on your quad, stop at the stripe on the ground and throw your bowling ball at the pins. What's so hard about that? Everything.

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
