Behind the testicle festival - an intense competition

Judges take a piece of the barbecued meat and place it on a paper place mat marked with numbers.

Top names in national barbecue competitions are expected at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Saturday, Sept. 29 at its annual Mazatzal Grill Masters BBQ Competition & Testicle Festival.

Organizers say 43 of the nation’s best competitive BBQ teams, including Johnny Trigg (Smokin’ Triggers BBQ), star of TLC reality show BBQ Pitmasters, two-time BBQ World Champion and BBQ Hall of Famer, will be competing for the title of Mazatzal Grill Masters BBQ Grand Champion (a KCBS Master Series Event) and their share of $17,000 in cash prizes.

Guests can sample competition BBQ directly from the competitors for $2 and cast their vote for the People’s Choice winner. The People’s Choice winner will receive $1,000 in cash, a trophy and title of People’s Choice Champion.

Ms Fitz BBQ of Payson will also be participating.

Guests can visit a variety of festival vendors, taste competition BBQ, enter the casino’s Hot Wing, “Rocky Mountain Oyster” and kids pie eating contests and enjoy a live remote by KRIM from 10 a.m. to noon, and then live classic rock entertainment from noon to 3 p.m. with Phoenix’s No. 1 Classic Rock Station DJ & KSLX’s own Pete Cummings Band.

Gates open at 10 a.m.; BBQ judging begins at noon; and the BBQ awards ceremony is at 3:30 p.m.
