Writers give scholarship

Connie Cockrell, Payson Book Festival director, met with The Friends of Gila Community College board March 8 to present a check for $500 toward a scholarship for a deserving communications student. Arizona Professional Writers Rim Country has provided scholarships for the last three years. The board chairman Jeanne Casella received the check for the entire board.

The scholarship comes from a portion of the profits from the popular Payson Book Festival.

This free, family-friendly event offers book lovers of all ages an opportunity to meet more than 70 Arizona authors from throughout the state who will sign and sell both fiction and non-fiction books. The major goals are to promote literacy and showcase Arizona authors.

Themed, “Reading Takes Us to Amazing Places,” the festival is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 21 and features a variety of activities. These include: a story time session for children, where they can meet the “Cat in the Hat” and “Story Monster,” author presentations, a presentation for teens, cowboy poetry and songs, entertainment, and door prizes.
