The Payson Patriotic Events Committee is organizing a ceremony for Flag Day, Friday, June 14 at the Veterans Memorial at Green Valley Park.
The program starts at 8 a.m. with a welcome from the committee chairman, retired Marine Corps Col. Bill Sahno.
Gary Cordell is providing patriotic music for the event.
Sahno will introduce Bobby Davis following the welcome and he, in turn, will bring up Father Joseph Vieira for the invocation.
Davis, continuing as master of ceremonies, will introduce the national anthem and the Marines will raise the U.S. flag. He will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and then provide a brief background to the work that we all did to secure the Governor’s Commendation as Flag Capital of Arizona.
The program continues with remarks from Payson Mayor Tom Morrissey; Robert Weeks, with the Payson Lions, which spearheaded the effort to win the designation as Flag Capital of Arizona; and Bruce Wales, American patriot.
Following the planned remarks, the song, “God Bless America” will be played and the audience invited to sing and Vieira will present the benediction.
There will be a moment of silence and then “Amazing Grace” and “Taps” will be played.
the Payson Lions flag program
As part of ongoing efforts to make Payson the Flag Capital of Arizona, the Payson Lions Club, since 2011, has sponsored a Fly the Flag Program. For a $35 donation to the club, members will place flags at homes and businesses to be flown on Presidents Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day.
