The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a women’s death near Sunset Crater National Monument.

At about 3:45 p.m. Feb. 21, deputies responded to Forest Road 545 north of Flagstaff, along Highway 89, for a report of a dead body found by a camper.

The camper reported finding a women’s body near a camp.

Deputies from the Flagstaff district responded along with the National Park Service and Forest Service who were in the area to help locate the body and secure the scene.

Once on scene, deputies located a woman’s body.  Coconino County Criminal Investigations and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office were notified and investigators worked through the night and into the next day before clearing the scene.

The body was transported by the medical examiner’s office in Flagstaff Friday evening.  Because of the ongoing investigation, no further details are available.

The CCSO is asking for the public’s help.  Anyone who may have recently seen anything suspicious in the area of Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument is asked to contact silent witness at (928) 774-6111 or Coconino County Sheriff’s Det. Jones at (928) 226-5038.
