Cody A. Smith was arrested Dec. 17 for transporting over 30 pounds of illegal marijuana from California.

Cody A. Smith was arrested Dec. 17 for drug possession for sale and transportation of drugs.

The arrest came after an officer with the Tonto Apache Police Department was about to make a traffic stop on a vehicle northbound on Highway 87. The vehicle pulled into the Circle K parking lot on the south end of town. The driver quickly exited the vehicle and ran into the store. The officer waited outside to contact the driver for the observed violation.

While waiting, an off-duty firefighter contacted the officer and advised him the driver exited the business through a side door, set off an alarm, and fled northbound into Payson.

Through a cooperative effort with the Payson Police Department, the subject was found at the Walmart store. He had purchased new clothing and changed inside the store.

A search warrant served on the vehicle revealed Smith was transporting over 30 pounds of illegal marijuana from California to his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

Smith was booked into the Gila County jail.

The Tonto Apache Police Department would like to thank the Payson Police Department for their assistance in apprehending a subject who was transporting drugs over state lines.
