The Gila County Sheriff’s Office says a man who fled from officers Thursday night is still on the loose.

About 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the GCSO got word from a Valley police agency that a man they had tried to stop on outstanding warrants had evaded officers and was headed north.

Deputies caught up with the man in the area of Jakes Corner on State Route 188, said Lt. Tim Scott with the GCSO.

Deputies tried to stop him, but he fled north toward Payson, Scott said.

Deputies pursued, but when the driver started to drive erratically, passing motorists on the right and in the shoulder, they pulled back for the safety of other motorists, he said.

The Payson Police Department was notified of the chase and had officers place spike strips at the south end of town near the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino.

But the man never made it to Payson.

The GCSO believes the man made a U-turn on State Route 87 and headed south before reaching town. Deputies never saw the man turn around and lost the vehicle. He is still on the run. Scott did not know the identity of the man.
