A man and woman were charged after officers spotted drug paraphernalia items in a rental car.

A man was arrested Christmas Eve for reportedly carrying more than Christmas gifts in his car, including drugs and weapons.

Officers with the Tonto Apache Police Department reportedly spotted drug paraphernalia “in plain view through the untinted vehicle windows” of a rental car on tribal land on Dec. 24.

A search of the vehicle yielded about 4,500 fentanyl pills with a street value of about $45,000, There was also $3,000 in cash, an AR-15 pistol and a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, according to Sgt. James Palmer. The drugs were headed from Phoenix to New Mexico.

The driver, Timothy McGarity, was arrested on charges of possession of narcotic drugs, possession of narcotic drugs for sale, transporting narcotic drugs, and misconduct with weapons.

A female passenger was also charged with the same crimes, but was released at the scene.
