The Tonto Apache Police Department is investigating the death of a man at the tribal pool Wednesday morning.

Around 9:45 a.m., staff found Alvin Schmalzer, 82, of Payson, at the deep end of the Tonto Apache Gym’s indoor pool.

They pulled him out, started CPR and attached an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The machine did not deliver a shock, according to a Payson Fire Department official.

Paramedics began advanced cardiac measures and transported him to Banner Payson Medical Center. Doctors there later pronounced him dead.

The Tonto Apache Police Chief Mary Jarvis said there is no evidence of foul play. They are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

A fire official said it appears the man was underwater “for an extended period of time.”
