Dr. Kim Berglund of Happy Tails Mobile Vet

Kim Berglund owns Happy Tails Mobile Vet. The clinic serves Payson, Tonto Basin and Pine.

Did you know there is a full service walk-in veterinarian clinic parked at the Humane Society of Central Arizona each Wednesday?

Dr. Kim Berglund opened her mobile veterinary practice in March. Berglund owned and operated a veterinary clinic in Wisconsin before moving to Payson in 2015.

Seeing an opportunity to serve areas like Pine and Tonto Basin, she left the local clinic she was working for and opened her own rolling clinic.

“I like to work independently,” said Berglund, who operates Happy Tails Mobile Vet three days a week. “We’re in Payson on Wednesdays, Tonto Basin on Thursdays and Pine on Fridays.”

The Humane Society of Central Arizona lets her park in their parking lot on Wednesdays.

“We do what we can to support her work,” said DJ Palmer, co-executive director of HSCAZ.

Berglund’s mobile rig is equipped for surgeries and routine veterinary visits. It has four kennels, a scale that doubles as an operating table and lab equipment.

“Mobility is important,” said Berglund. “People in Tonto Basin really appreciate us coming down there. Some people don’t travel easily, especially with cats. It’s nice you can be right there for them.”

Happy Tails Mobile Vet does surgeries in the mornings and walk-in visits in the afternoons. It also offers dental services for both cats and dogs.

The clinic offers low-cost spays and neuters for cats from the Friends of Ferals program.

Berglund started out her career as a veterinarian tech. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison with her veterinarian degree.

Although she does not have a building, many of the same costs are involved in running a mobile unit, Berglund says. There’s a license fee, insurance, workers compensation, liability insurance, pet medications and supplies.

“My goal is to provide great service for reasonable prices,” she said.

Happy Tails Mobile Vet operates Wednesday in Payson from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday in Tonto Basin from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday in Pine from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
