Car fire

Pine-Strawberry Fire Department Capt. Joel Brandt (left) and firefighter Bill Potter work to put out the flames on a Pine resident’s car at the entrance to the Portal IV subdivision off Highway 87 in Pine Wednesday.

As Pine-Strawberry Fire Department (PSFD) Capt. Phil Paine was driving home Wednesday, he spotted a vehicle fire at the entrance to Portal IV off Highway 87.

Paine, who is also the fire chief of the Blue Ridge Fire Department, reported the fire to the nearby fire station and grabbed his extinguisher, reported PSFD Chief John Wisner.

“He even tried to put the fire out with his extinguisher, but it was just too big,” he wrote.

The fire extinguisher helped stall the fire, said PSFD Capt. Joel Brandt. Thanks to the quick call by Paine and response by PSFD engines 411 and 421 under Brandt’s direction, firefighters were able to get the fire out before it could spread to nearby brush.

Residents who saw smoke were nervous, but the situation was quickly under control. The car belongs to a local resident. There were no injuries, said Brandt.
