The recycling bins at Sawmill Crossing are being moved to the fire station off Rancho Road.

Only two trash service providers remain in Payson after Waste Management purchased Waste Matters.

Waste Management (WM) officially took over Waste Matters Sept. 1.

Existing Waste Matters customers won’t notice much difference with the day of trash pick up unchanged as well as rates — at least for the first year. However, the company will no longer sort trash for recyclables.

“We will provide safe, reliable trash collection services at your current rate, beginning the first week of September. You have my guarantee that your rate will not change for 12 months,” wrote Melodi Deaton, district manager, in a letter to customers. “We will continue to service your home on your current schedule.”

Jay Eby, Waste Matters CEO, said selling the business to WM “was strictly a business decision.”

Waste Matters’ parent company, Patriot Disposal Inc., will continue to operate trash service in Yavapai County.

All Waste Matters employees were either retained by WM or retained by Patriot Disposal Inc., he said.

While Waste Matters offered recycling service, separating out the recyclables at its plant in Prescott, WM does not offer curbside recycling in the area.

WM will, however, continue to service the community recycling bins located around town.

Jennifer Rivera, communications director with WM, said it is important to only put clean, dry recyclable materials in the recycling bins.

“It is very important to keep all trash out of the recycling bins,” she said. “Food, liquid and other waste can ruin good recyclables and send them to the landfill instead of to their next best use. Clean recyclables should be placed loose (not bagged) into the correct bins.”

WM offers service to customers across Rim Country from Payson, Clints Well, Starlight Pines, Blue Ridge, Forest Lakes, Tonto Basin and Apache Lake.

In Payson, trash service for new WM customers is $21.66 monthly. WM bills quarterly. There is a one-time $30 fee to have a trash can delivered. They have been serving Arizona residents and businesses for more than 50 years.

Roadrunner Rubbish Removal meanwhile charges $18.75 a month. They bill every two months. There is no set-up fee. Roadrunner says the trash that it collects is sorted at the landfill with any recyclables removed.
