As snow fell on the Rim, Payson welcomed in the Christmas season on Saturday in small-town style with the cherished APS Electric Light Parade down Main Street.
This year’s parade offered a special treat — with Mr. and Mrs. Claus ensconced in a beautiful new sleigh — drawn by a stately steed.
The crowd came bundled up against the cold, but the temperatures seemed warm compared to last year. The freezing rain held off until later in the evening, in an outbreak of meteorological manners. The storm that brought more than six inches of snow to the upper reaches of Flagstaff barely rained on Rim Country below the Rim.
But the chill and threat of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd that lined Main Street to cheer dozens of parade entries, each one festooned with Christmas lights.
Children who might have been nestled snug in their beds instead donned Santa hats, elf shoes and angel wings to contribute their shy, radiant smiles — the brightest lights on the float. The crowd oohed and ahhed, their cockles warmed by the cherubs.
The perfect night for a perfect start to the Christmas countdown.
