David B. Gilbert, M.D. 1928-2019

Dr. David B. Gilbert, succumbed to multiple severe illnesses on Jan. 26, 2019.

He was born Sept. 27, 1928 in Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio, the first son of Pearl Evelyn Alloway and Ernest Abraham Gilbert. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in June 1950 and a Doctor of Medicine in June 1956, from Ohio State University at Columbus. As a musician, he served as carillonneur for the campus at OSU.

After an internship at Good Samaritan and Maricopa County Hospitals in Phoenix, he moved to Payson, where he brought state-of-the art medicine and surgery to Northern Gila County by opening, equipping and operating their first general hospital on June 30, 1957.

He served the Town of Payson as Vice-Mayor 1973-74; Past President and, Charter Member, Payson Rotary Club; Past Exalted Ruler, Charter Trustee, Payson Elks Lodge #2154; Past Secretary, Charter Member, Payson Sanitary District; Past President and Charter Member Medical Staff, Payson Hospital; Past President, Secretary, Gila County Medical Society, 1957-81; Arizona and American Medical Associations, and Diplomate, American Board of Family Practice.

In the 1980s-90s, Dr. Gilbert sang tenor in community choral groups in Payson and Tempe. He was a founder and organist at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 1963-69, and also founder and organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1969 to present time (40-plus years). He was employed by Gila County for over two decades as county physician and coroner. In 2007, he was officially designated as a Pioneer in Northern Gila County.

As his health deteriorated, he retired from surgery in September 1981 and moved to Scottsdale in July 1995. For almost a decade and a half, he entertained the patients and staff at the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, on the piano twice weekly, and twice monthly he led the singing at various nursing homes in Maricopa County.

Survivors include: life companion, Anna Lutey, Chandler; sons, Jeffrey Thomas (Annette) Gilbert of Tucson, and Douglas Bruce (Karen) Gilbert of Carefree; grand-sons, Christopher Maly, Kyle Gilbert, and Thomas Gilbert, all from Tucson; granddaughter, Courtnie Beals of Sahuarita, Ariz.; great-grandson, Wyatt Beals of Sahuarita, Ariz.; step-children, son, Bryan Dudley of Payson, daughters, Tracey Floyd of Payson, Sherry Howell of Layton, Utah; grandsons, Troy Floyd of Tucson, Sean Alford of Phoenix, B.J. Alford of Los Angeles, and Brett Alford of Los Angeles; granddaughter, Missy Howell of Layton, Utah; great-granddaughters, Samantha Floyd of Phoenix, Peyton Alford of Phoenix, Ava Alford of Los Angeles, and Mia Alford of Los Angeles.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 23 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson, AZ 85541 for those who would like to attend.
