Marcia Kay Aronson 1950-2018

Tolleson – Marcia Kay Aronson, 68, passed away peace-fully on October 4, 2018, surrounded by family. Marcia was born on May 1, 1950 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the fourth child born to Clifford and Elsie Aronson. At the age of 2 years old Marcia was diagnosed with Down Syndrome and her parents were told she would not live past the age of 25. She definitely defied the odds.

Marcia attended school in Greeley, Colorado for special needs students. Marcia moved with her family in 1971 when her dad transferred from Colorado’s Livestock Board to Phoenix as a brand inspector.

In 1977, Marcia and her parents relocated to Payson, Arizona to enjoy the beauty of the high country, witness the elk coming in and bed-ding down, almost nightly in the front yard, and her dad could enjoy riding his mule or horse for miles in the back country. Elsie did the most beautiful embroidery work on tea-towels and pillow cases and for 25 years Marcia and mom made the trip to Pine for the craft shows in May, July and September.

When Marcia’s devoted and compassionate mother, Elsie passed away in 2008 at the age of 89, Marcia went to live with her brother Dick and his wife Lois in Tolleson, Arizona and embarked on another chapter in her life.

She loved life to its fullest, such a happy, happy person, always giving hugs and saying, “I love you too.” She was so innocent, the sweetest and most endearing child-like person. She participated in Special Olympics bowling both in Avondale and Payson and was most proud of the medal she won. She loved to dance, sing, watch cartoons and rodeos on TV (particularly bull riding), listen to western music, ride her 3-wheel-er bike and shoot basketball hoops.

Marcia is preceded in death by her parents Cliff and Elsie, her sisters Karen Aronson and Colleen Staudinger and brother Dick Aronson. She is survived by her sister-in-law Lois Aronson, brother-in-law Jim Staudinger (Jan), nephews Trevor Aronson (Dawn), Devon Aronson (Darci) and children Tanner and Elsa, Troy Staudinger (Tasha) and children Kodey and Kaylee, and Ty Staudinger (Nicole) and children Hailey, Will, Kyla, and Wyatt, and great nephew Kyler Baker. She is also survived by a great aunt, aunt and uncle and cousins in Colorado and Iowa.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 100 West Roosevelt, Phoenix, AZ 85003. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Sharing Down Syndrome of Arizona at SDSA, 745 North Gilbert Road, Suite 124-273, Gilbert, Arizona 85234.
