The recent flap over feeding waterfowl at Green Valley Park brings to mind two old adages: “Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater,” and, “A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.”
In this case, the waterfowl are the “baby.” The other saying refers to the lack of understanding of the needs of these migrating birds in the winter. They are not itinerants; they are residents here for nearly half the year, perhaps more.
Go to any Game & Fish website from here to Maine and they will all tell you the same thing: PROPER feeding in the winter is very important. PROPER feeding includes: corn, wheat, rice, etc. Notice, I used the word PROPER. Bread, tortillas, Cheetos, popcorn are garbage and those who put out such things should be stopped.
Also, all feeding of wildlife should be stopped in the summer. This includes scratch, which is 8% protein. For whatever reason, the duck population isn’t what it used to be. They need our help!
Let’s install corn operated feeders for the period Nov. 1 to May 1. Let’s not “DUCK” the issue!
