A game against #1 Holbrook promised to offer a good test of just where Payson’s girls basketball team stood against the state’s elite.

And the Roadrunners showed the Horns what they need to work on in a 60-34 victory at Wilson Dome.

The visitors led 22-8 after one quarter and 38-18 at halftime.

Emmy Whaley led Payson with 10 points. Cadence White added eight points.

Alyssa Yazzie scored a game-high 14 points to lead a trio of Roadrunners in double figures. Shan Footracer added 13 points and Noheah Aberle 10 points as Holbrook improved to 13-2-1 overall and 6-0 in ranking games.

No. 14 (Jan. 11) Payson carries a 9-5 overall and 5-2 ranking record into its Wednesday, Jan. 12 game at Fountain Hills.

The Longhorns will look to even their 0-1 3A East log at Blue Ridge on Friday, Jan. 14.
