BBL-Brian Young

Brian Young reached a milestone when he reached his 200th game as Payson’s varsity baseball coach in a win over Chino Valley in the regular-season finale on April 24. He has guided the Longhorns to a 122-76-2 record, three consecutive 3A East titles and seven state tournament berths in seven seasons.

Payson High School boasts a rich history of athletic success.

And the baseball program currently stands as the pride of the school.

The biggest reason is the presence of head coach Brian Young. It’s clear he possesses the ability to get the best out of his players as he’s guided the Longhorns to the state tournament in each of his seven seasons as head coach.

Payson has gone 122-76-2 (.616) under Young. The Longhorns have won three consecutive region titles and have gone 9-6 in six previous state tournaments, including play-in games. Payson has reached the quarterfinals three times and the semifinals twice (2013, 2017) in its previous six tournament appearances under Young.

The third-seeded Longhorns open this year’s state tournament against No. 14 Fountain Hills at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Surprise.
