Softball Tiny Purple Hats

It’s been a party-like season for Payson’s softball team. The Longhorns were No. 5 in the 3A Conference in Friday’s rankings and are tied for first in the 3A East Region.

Chanci Landress was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead a Payson offense that collected 16 hits in an 11-2 win over visiting Holbrook on Saturday night.

Abby Kiekintveld contributed three hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Longhorns, who pulled into a first-place tie in the 3A East Region with Show Low at 4-1 and improved to 10-2 in power points games.

Missy Chiccino, Makyla Hill and Mercedes Miranda all added two hits for the Longhorns. Kara Percell singled and drove in two. Raci Miranda doubled and reached base three times and stole two bases.

She scattered seven hits and one walk and struck out 11 Roadrunners in seven innings for the win. Both runs were earned.

Payson, which has gone 10-1 in its last 11 power points games, was No. 5 in Friday’s 3A rankings.

The game was a makeup of a game postponed by the weather earlier in the season.

The Longhorns kick off the second half of their 10-game 3A East schedule at Holbrook at 3 o’clock today. Payson is at Snowflake at 3 p.m. Friday before hosting Chino Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Payson is tied with Show Low for first place in the 3A East at 4-1. Snowflake and Winslow are tied for third one game back (3-2).
