Tim Ernst beat Jon Robles 3 and 1 (up three holes with one remaining) to open his bid for a third consecutive Payson Men’s Golf Association Match Play Championship at Payson Golf Course on May 29.

Ernst is trying to claim his fourth match play crown in six years. He also won the tournament in 2014, 2017 and 2018.

He moves on to the A Flight semifinals on June 5 to take on Larry Smith, who beat Mike Anderson 4 and 3. Tim Hughes beat Alex Armenta 3 and 2 and Terry Lindsey beat Chip Yeomans 2 and 1 on the other side of the bracket.

In B Flight action, Ed Bossert beat Al Chittenden 5 and 4, Chuck Walker beat Dennis Schwebs 3 and 2, Gary Vaplon beat Kevin Bailey 2 and 1 and Ron Fischer beat Richard Harding 1 up in 19 holes.

In C Flight play, Dave Rutter beat Chuck Carrier 9 and 8, Bill Mullins beat John Calderwood 5 and 4, George Spatz beat Popeye Clay 6 and 5 and Herb Sherman beat Jim Livingston 5 and 4.

Ernst sank the longest putt with a 7-foot shot on the 18th hole.

Closest-to-the-pin winners included: Mike Anderson (No. 5, 11 feet 10 inches), Lindsey (No. 8, 3-11), Walker (No. 14, 10-4 1/2) and Bossert (No. 17, 15-4).
