Tim Hughes beat Terry Lindsey 5 and 4 and Tim Ernst beat Larry Smith 5 and 4 to advance to the A Flight championship round in the Payson Men’s Golf Association Match Play Championship at Payson Golf Course on June 5 and 7.

Both had reached the semifinals by winning their opening round matches on May 29. Hughes beat Lindsey on Wednesday but Ernst and Smith didn’t face off until Friday because of a scheduling conflict.

The final matches in three flights take place June 12.

Chuck Walker beat Ed Bossert 4 and 3 and Gary Vaplon beat Ron Fischer 4 and 3 in the B Flight semifinals. Dave Rutter beat Bill Mullins 4 and 3 and Herb Sherman won by forfeit in the C Flight semifinals.

Sherman wins low net crown

Herb Sherman fired a 66.6 score to edge Chuck Carrier (67) and win the Individual Low Net Tournament. Most of the golfers in the tournament had been eliminated from the match play tournament in the first round the previous week. However, Sherman didn’t have a semifinal match, so he was able to play in this event.

Gary Campbell (70.1) finished third.

Chuck Carrier had the longest putt of the day, finding the cup from 5 feet out on No. 9.

Closest-to-the-pin winners included: Alex Armenta (No. 5, 15 feet 3 inches), Kevin Bailey (No. 8, 10-10 ½), Richard Harding (No. 14, 8-11) and Terry Lindsey (No. 17, 13-4).
